Considering Weather Elements

Rain: Your illuminated sign is electrical and exposed to the elements. Only qualified electrical contractors should install, repair or maintain your light boxes.

Wind: Wind has an effect of a sail. Do not reduce any bracketing systems, structure speciation or footings when considering a sign.

Illuminated Signage Basics

Illuminated Signs and lit signage are fantastic and powerful advertising mechanics. Used correctly, a business can rely on the front sign to attract new clients all hours, convey a message of business professionalism and importantly, increase your business.

Generally, Illuminated signs are designed and made to last for a long period. Illuminated signs can be fixed directly to buildings, freestanding on poles and abut from buildings. QuickSmart modern design programs allow a combination of lighting design, artwork design and cut out laser lettering to achieve incredible results that pull customers.

When choosing to purchase an illuminated sign consider the following:

  • Safety - both from wind, sign face, framework and negative human factors
  • Illumination value - strength of lighting, artwork clarity, immovable obstructions and message
  • Height - this is an important factor when designing signage (see E zine Height of Signage)
  • Color schemes
  • Transparency values - spread of light to create an even illumination. When manufactured correctly, your illuminated signs should show slight over shadowing. This ensures the maximum illumination. When no over shadowing occurs, you may be losing impact and distance of view.
  • Blue wool Scale.  This determines the lightfast qualities of materials.

Making a Sign Illuminated

Light boxes suited for illumination can be made from aluminum moldings, fabricated sheet metal or plastic moldings. Importantly, the design and cost should achieve all the qualities above.
The light box (right) is set to a timer and light clarity meter. This allows the sign to automatically switch on as the sun sets on horizon and automatically turn off at a specified time. These controls can be easily site installed by your qualified electrician.

Choosing Correct Tubes

Wattage, spacing between the florescent tubes, distance and thickness of the sign box and internal colors are important factors when choosing tubes. QuickSmart internally coat most sign boxes white to assist the refection value of internal lighting. Occasionally, internal sections may be coated a separate color to assist the exterior artwork illumination area.

When replacing tubes, it should be remembered that electrical works inside are originally supplied to a specific wattage, ratings and electrical supply. Please replace any tubes with original illumination settings.

  • Tip: Keep all wiring away from sign face to avoid shadowing.
